Ozzy Osbourne, the Prince of Darkness, has joined other rockers in creating his very own non-fungible token (NFT). An NFT is an exclusive digital file users can buy that holds value. Users can buy, sell and trade NFTs at their leisure.

So, why is the Black Sabbath frontman and solo artist releasing a bat-themed NFT? We’ll explain it all below.

Why bat-themed, and why now?

On January 20, 1982, Ozzy shocked the world by biting the head off a bat while on stage. Before you jump back because the Crazy Train singer killed a live animal in front of thousands of screaming fans, the bat was very much dead before Ozzy took his bite.

A fan at Osbourne’s Des Moines, Iowa show brought a bat carcass and threw it on stage. Osbourne, believing it was a rubber toy, grabbed the deceased bat and chomped its head off. Osbourne regretted the decision, noting the horrible taste it left in his mouth and the rounds of painful rabies shots he received following the stunt.

Fast-forward 40 years, and the Prince of Darkness is capitalizing on this anniversary with a bat-themed NFT dubbed CryptoBatz. These NFTs, which went on public sale on January 20, 2022 at 6:30 p.m. EST, are limited to just 9,666 units, making them a rare treat for fans.

Why are CryptoBatz special?

NFTs are great because they are each unique, and CryptoBatz are no different. But with a unique backer like Ozzy Osbourne, there must be something special about them.

And Ozzy doesn’t disappoint. Each CryptoBat will have the ability to “bite” another NFT from a different blue-chip project within the CryptoBatz’ owner’s wallet. These bites will turn the CryptoBat into a MutantBat with shared DNA between it and the NFT it “bit.”

Keep in mind, each CrytptoBat can bite only once, so you can’t change your MutantBat once you create it by biting another NFT.

The blue-chip projects MutantBats can bite will include:

  • BAYC

  • CrypToadz

  • SupDucks

  • Alien Frens

  • CyberKongz

You must own the CryptoBat and the blue-chip project within the same wallet for the “bite” function to become available.

The future of CryptoBatz

CryptoBatz isn't done yet. In the first quarter of 2022, Osbourne will also release AncientBatz. AncientBatz will be special NFTs that can bite up to 99 times, allowing users to create a new MutantBat 99 times.

AncientBatz will only be available to CryptoBatz holders and exclusively through a worldwide treasure hunt. CryptoBatz holders can see updated locations on an interactive map.

When you find the AncientBat, you can claim it by scanning the QR code, which will reveal a special wallet you can only open with your CryptoBat.

AncientBatz location clues will be given every week, and the clues will get easier each week until all the AncientBatz are found.
